Math The week of 10.10.16, fourth grade will be ending their place value unit and starting multiplication with 1 digit numbers. Above is a "Home School Connection" letter that introduces out new unit of study.
What is Fact Fluency? "The Grafton Public School District defines math fact fluency as the ability to recall from memory basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts automatically, effortlessly, and accurately. Students who are mathematically fluent are able to quickly and successfully learn and understand higher-order concepts. When facts are automatic, students are not slowed down by having to put energy into figuring out the fact and can instead put that energy into the other skills involved in learning math concepts." Currently in math, the fourth grade team is teaching and spiraling back over the following Common Core State Standards: 4.NBT.1 Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. For example, recognize that 700 / 70 = 10 by applying concepts of place value and division.
4.NBT.2 Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Compare two multi-digit numbers based on meanings of the digits in each place, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.
4.NBT.3 Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place.
4.NBT.4 Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
